Het Maurits Mysterie: a cycling escape game around Willemstad
Article
A new mission on the Stelling Fiets
Over the past weeks Hans Timmermans has been working on Het Maurits Mysterie, a new location-based game made for Fort Producties. It is designed as a cycling route around Willemstad, but the experience is more than a route alone: it combines a bicycle trip, a treasure hunt and the tension of an escape room.
Players ride a special bicycle with a case mounted at the front. Inside that case are the tools and materials needed to investigate the story, solve puzzles and build a personal case file along the way.
Puzzle route, fieldwork and escape room
The game sends players past old forts, sluices and bastions in and around Willemstad. At each location they find information, puzzle questions and traces that help them understand what is going on. Bit by bit, the route turns into an investigation: collect clues, compare details, unlock codes and decide what belongs in the dossier.
The story centres on a mission to prevent the waterline from being activated again. To succeed, players have to use the objects from the bicycle case, read the locations carefully and connect the information they gather on the road.
That combination is what makes the project special: the landscape is not just a backdrop, but part of the game system. The route, the physical props, the historical locations and the online game layer all work together.
More information and the game itself can be found at hetmauritsmysterie.nl.
